Consider that,

As humans, we have unconscious survival mechanisms that we constantly unconsciously use to stop ourselves experiencing the pain of a problem in our lives.

One of these mechanisms, is denial.

It’s simple really, by not allowing our attention to attach fully onto a problem that we have in our lives we can numb the painful emotions attached to facing it completely.

It’s works, but it also has extremely dangerous consequences if we persistently use it over a long period of time.

For example, consider that when we gain weight, humans are prone to doing a few things to avoid the pain of problem…

 For example;

We avoid the scales.

We wear wear clothes

We go out and socialise less

We avoid photographs

We avoid holidays or environments where we may need to expose our bodies.

Now all of these ‘work’ in that, by avoiding the problem, we don’t allow ourselves to feel the fullness of the pain of the problem.

 We can limit Shame.

We can limit guilt.

We can limit fear.

Does it mean problem doesn’t exist?

 No.

It means we just can feel the fullness of it as much as we would do if we faced it head on.

You can see why we do it, sometimes it hurts to face the truth.

This behaviour is not exclusive to weight gain.

Consider that if we’re struggling with money, not chancing our bank account is a common coping mechanism.

Same principle, by not looking at the issue, we can feel the fullness of the anxiety and fear.

The issue with this tactic is that is doesn’t make the problem go away.

Worse still, but not facing it fully, by not feeling the fullness of the painful emotions associated with the problem we have no motivation to change the habits that are causing the problem to arise.

 Think about it…

If I gain 10kg, but wear bigger clothes, isolate myself, avoid photographs and holidays - I can completely deny that the problem exists because I can’t feel it.

So I have no reason to change the nutrition and exercise habits that are creating the problem.

Subsequently, if I’m not changing the root cause of the problem, because I can’t feel the problem…

Then the problem will get worse over the weeks and months.

10kg excess fat will become 12/14/16/20kg…

And now you see why denial is a very dangerous strategy to use as a long term pain management tool.

 Why? Because the painful problem

Will get worse until the issue is so big

that it becomes unavoidable

And at that point, you may even suffer

Irreversible health issues

Or… when you are forced to face

reality head on

You find yourself staring at a huge

problem that metaphorically speaking, to fix, can feel like you’re standing at the bottom of Mount Everest.

With a mammoth task ahead of

your to reverse the situation

A task so big, that you can almost

feel exhausted at the prospect of even

getting started.

Denial works as a short term management strategy and can sometimes be incredulous useful

But denying your problems for msg make them go away, infact often, denying them can mean the behaviours perpetuate

 And the problem becomes

bigger with time.

The hardest but most important part of

change is the first step.

Facing the truth of our current realities and allowing yourself to feel the fullness of the painful emotions associated with the issue

As an experience it can hurt.

But consider inside this painful experience is also a gift. That gift being the key to unlock the motivation to change the behaviours that have caused you to get to where you are.

 You are where you are.

Things can always be better.

Things can always be worse.

Find the courage to face the truth because unfortunately denying it will not make the problem go away, it will commonly make it get worse
